The Director General CERN announces Australian Centre of 25 M $ on the origins of the universe (eurekalert.org)

 

The Director General of CERN, Switzerland, Dr. Rolf - Dieter Heuer, announced a new Council Research Centre Australian 25 m $ to explore the origins of the universe after the big bang at the Institute of physics Congress this week.


Led by the University of Melbourne, the Centre of excellence for experimental physical particle to the Terascale CRA will examine energy of terabytes (1 million electron volts million) thanks to the experience of the ATLAS, is a giant particle detector attached to the large Hadron at CERN Collider particle physics.


Professor Rolf-Dieter Heuer also announced that the President of the international Advisory Committee of the ARC Centre.


Director of the center of the ARC, Professor Geoff Taylor, school of physics at the University of Melbourne, said by probing the higher energies, fundamental particle interactions could be found on the early stages of the evolution of the universe after the big bang.


"Exciting new physics such as the existence of microscopic black holes, extra space dimensions and an extension called SRT super symmetry is motivated by plausible extensions of the standard model of possible particle physics discoveries."


In particular, scientists say that they are not discover the elusive Higgs boson particle explains how particulate matter as their mass and never found.

"Our scientific effort is to leave a legacy of national capacity increased at the forefront of this intellectual endeavour."

"We are very excited to make this announcement today begins a new era of Australian scientific research collaboration in the field of particle physics and understand the beginnings of the universe", he said.


The Centre brings together researchers from the University of Melbourne, the University of Adelaide, Monash University, the University of Sydney and international collaborators, including Cambridge University, the University of Pennsylvania, University of Fribourg, Geneva University, Duke University and INFN Milano.

Syntactic and composite foams III Conference (eurekalert.org)

 

The first International Conference on the Syntactic and composite foams (CWS-I), under the auspices of the CIS, Inc. was held in Banff, Canada in August 2004 and has been very successful. Syntactic foam component manufacturers took the opportunity to interact with many connections and applications specialists and University and collaboration efforts have ensued. The papers presented at the Conference were published, after reviewing peer in a special issue of the journal of materials science. This series (CWS - II), sponsored by the applicant, the second Conference took place in Davos, Switzerland in 2007. It is also a very successful meeting and papers presented at the Conference were published in the journal of Materials Science. The Conference third project, CWS - III, in this series will be an ongoing forum for discussions in this area growing Moss mosses and syntactic composites. Syntactic foam and rigid polymer, metal and ceramic foams containing a building or functional phase are planned for this Conference. These foams are typically used in applications that take advantage of their low density structure pores on measurement, high specific properties, energy absorption characteristics and fire-retardant properties. The scope of the Conference will include the production and characterization of materials reinforce functional and used specifically for these foams (i.e. hollow spheres, micro NANOPARTICLES, particles with magnetic, electrical properties dielectric specific, biological, etc.). Fabrication, characterization, modeling, foam applications will be addressed, as well.


Syntactic foam work has expanded considerably over the past three decades since its inception with foam matrix polymer two-phase based on hollow glass or polymer spheres for applications in the marine and underwater industry. Today, the field includes polymers, metallic and ceramic hollow spheres and matrices. In addition, with fibres, nanoparticles and the empty interstitial engineering made from these materials, three and four phases materials is possible. Composite foams have increased by conventional blown polymer foams now include the addition of functional elements, resulting in complex microstructures can be designed to respond to specific applications. Composite foams with biodegradable polymer or matrices ceramic bioactive, for example, are more developed for a range of biomedical applications, drug distribution systems and tissue engineering scaffolds. Also, blown polymer foams are now used as a precursor of structures for metal composite foams and ceramics and the progress of various materials component production techniques resulted in progress in the heat of these foams have greatly expanded their applications, acoustic and mechanical properties.


Thus by incorporating solid and hollow particles, NANOPARTICLES, fibre and specialized foaming agents, coupled with new treatment techniques foams possess unique properties and custom may be obtained. As a result of these innovations, the role of syntactic and composite foams has expanded in the aerospace, automotive, communications, biomedical, electronics, sports and transportation industries.


SCF III documents will be still published in an appropriate, reviewed by peers. Date limit for the submission of manuscripts will be on September 5, 2011.

Calabria is the end of the Italian peninsula. It shares borders with the Basilicata and extends between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the lonian sea in the direction of Sicily, where he is divided by the Straits of Messina.
